Google reaches deal with CBS to carry network on its web TV service

mercredi 19 octobre 2016

Alphabet unit Google has reached an agreement with CBS to carry the network on its web TV service, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The service is expected to launch in the first quarter and will include all of CBS' content, including live NFL games, the source added.

Google is looking to offer a "skinny" bundle priced between $30 and $40 a month, the source said.

The company is also near an accord to distribute channels owned by Twenty-First Century Fox, another source said.

Fox has said publicly it wants to make its content more broadly available — it's likely to want to include all of its key brands in a new bundle as it has with Hulu and sonyVue. The key brands include: Fox network, FX, Fox News, National Geographic and Fox Sports.

The company has previously said the deals they do with distributors ensure they maintain the value of their brands, meaning they're not going to sell for less to a digital distributor.

The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, said Google is also in advanced talks with Walt Disney.

Google and Disney were not immediately available for comment, while CBS and Fox declined to comment.

CNBC's Julia Boorstin contributed to this report.
